Thanksgiving brussels sprout harvest

brussels sprouts 020

For Thanksgiving, I harvested my first ever crop of Brussels sprouts. They were tiny, the size of marbles. And not very many of them. We added some store bought sprouts and my sister made a nice dish of them for our feast day.

What kinds of sprouts did you grow? I'm in Kennebunk, ME, so nearly the same zone as you. I haven't had much luck getting size on my plants. Thinking of trying Long Island Improved or Nautic (from Johnny's) this next season.

I didn't look a the variety. I bought the seedlings at Mahoney's (Winchester MA) in mid August.

Some of the gardeners at our community gardens grow great big Brussels sprouts. I'll see if I can find out their variety. It seems to me that they plant a lot earlier than I did. As I remember, they have big plants and are starting to harvest already by mid August. The plants grow to giants by winter and they keep producing.

Yes, please find out what your community-mates are growing. I've never had much luck myself. (I'm in the Lewiston, Maine area). I think i haven't found the right variety yet and i probably don't start them early enough...
