I've been watching weather.com pretty close lately because I'm gearing up for my spring/summer garden. As you know we had 3 days in the mid-twenties last week, which is pretty cold for us here in Central Fl. Well they're calling for 2 more days in the 20's this week! I don't think we've had ONE day in the 20's the past 5 years! Global Warming? Hmmm.

It has been horribly frigid this year. We were doing great until about the middle of November. That was actually the freeze I remembered best. I was thinking my lettuce would be great for Thanksgiving, but no it's been frozen solid since that one freeze hit. I'm still hoping it will overwinter, but with the bitter cold I'm not confident at all about what will be alive come spring.

Don't you think with all the snow, there might be lots of overwintered vegetables underneath? I'm hoping to find some greens coming back this spring.

We lost all of our broccoli to cold weather this year before they had formed heads. That was depressing. Most of our cabbage pulled through, though, and it looks like our brussels sprouts are about to send up shoots. But we're expecting the big storm to hit sometime early next week. We might have to put our row covers up again, if only to protect from the ice.

I also wanted to plant my winter lettuce seedlings out next week, but with the storm coming that looks like it'll have to wait until the following week. I've been hardening them off all this week, but haven't yet left them out overnight. Oh well. They'll keep.

Hi Kathy and Skippy
I've been reading your blog and a few weeks ago started my own. I'm in New Zealand, so thought you might like to see what could be happening in Skippy's garden in 6 months time!

I've been growing vegetables for a few years but still consider myself a novice... just trying to create a planting schedule for the year so that I don't fall into my usual trap of planting everything too late.
Hope things warm up for you soon!

I'm in Boston too, and it was nice that the sun came out today and the temp was up around 40. As far as how this winter will affect the growing season...who knows. Sometimes a harsh winter inhibits the breeding of certain garden pests, and all of that melting snow can combat drought...

Last year we didn't need to combat any droughts... But like you said, who knows about this year ...
